For the fifth year in a row, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission honored law enforcement and others for their efforts to keep Louisiana highways safe from drunk drivers. The honorees were given awards at a ceremony held on March 6, 2013.

Sulphur PD announces five arrests

The following is a news release from the Sulphur Police Department:

The Sulphur Police Department has reported that on Feb. 28, 2013, officers of the department investigated one traffic accident reporting no injuries and issued seventeen traffic citations.

Officers also responded to several other incidents resulting in five arrests:

Courtney Nicole Bowers, a White Female, 26, of Sulphur, was arrested and booked into the Sulphur City Jail for theft of goods.

Shangri La Botanical Gardens announces March events

Shangri La Botanical Gardens announces March events

Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center has announced the following programs for March for the Spring Saturday Adventure Series 2013. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. and last about an hour.

These programs are free with paid admission to Shangri La. Participants are asked to meet at the Admissions Window at the scheduled event time. An RSVP is required as space is limited. For more information or to reserve a space, call 409-670-9799.

The following is a news release from the City of Sulphur:

Mayor Chris Duncan has announced that the railroad crossing on Lewis St. will be closed from Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. to Saturday, March 9 at 1 a.m. The closure is required so that Union Pacific can make repairs to the railroad crossing.

Black Heritage Festival named a Top 20 Event

The following is a news release from the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau:

The Southeast Tourism Society (STS) recently honored Black Heritage Festival as a Top 20 Event for the first quarter of 2013.    

Held annually on March 8-10, the festival brings together the cultures of Africa and Southwest Louisiana and celebrates diversity, culture and education. The festival is filled with zydeco, jazz and gospel performers as well as The Market Place, featuring African art and clothing.

The City of Lake Charles and Team Green of Southwest Louisiana will host the 17th Annual Litter Law Enforcement Luncheon on Thursday, March 7, at 11:30 a.m. in the Jean Lafitte Room of the Lake Charles Civic Center, located at 900 Lakeshore Dr.

The event is open to the public, and the guest speaker will be the Honorable Ulysses Gene Thibodeaux, Chief Judge, State of Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal.
