Career Readiness Expo set for April 20 in Westlake

The Black Employee Network at the Phillips 66 Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex is sponsoring a Career Readiness Expo from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20 at the Managen Recreation Center, located at 1000 McKinley St. in Westlake. The event is free and open to the public.

A free seminar titled “Legal Issues for Small Businesses” will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at Central Library, located at 301 W. Claude St. in Lake Charles.

Attorney Mark Judson will be the speaker. The seminar is presented by the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at McNeese and SCORE.

Business After Hours to be held Feb. 21 in Lake Charles

The SWLA Economic Development Alliance has announced that it will hold its monthly Business After Hours event on Feb. 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Imperial Health's Center For Orthopaedics office and Imaging Center, located at 1747 Imperial Boulevard in Lake Charles.

Admission is $1 for Chamber members and $5 for other attendees. The physicians and staff of Imperial Health will be on hand to conduct tours and demonstrations throughout the evening and door prizes will be given away.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) reminds holiday shoppers that “online” does not mean “tax-free.” Louisiana’s consumer use tax applies to purchases in which a retailer does not charge sales tax. This happens typically during transactions with online and mail-order retailers, or television shopping networks, that do not have physical locations in Louisiana.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service would like to remind federal tax return preparers that they must renew their Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs) for 2013. Also, preparers who have a competency test requirement should take the time to schedule an appointment for the exam.
