South Lake Charles Little League to hold final on-site registration Saturday

South Lake Charles Little League will have its final on-site registration from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at A.A. Nelson Elementary, 1001 Country Club Road.

Parents should bring the player's birth certificate and two proofs of residence -- usually a driver's license and a recent utility bill.

Rodeo comes to town

The rodeo is in town and the first major events happen Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Burton Coliseum.

Events continue through the weekend.

Representatives from the Southwest Louisiana and Rodeo Show stopped by KPLC on Thursday morning.

Joshua Barentine is the 2012 CBR World Champion Bull Rider.

“They have calf roping, team roping, barrel racing, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding – the whole nine yards for the rodeo,” Barentine said.

Allison Bell is Miss Rodeo Louisiana.

Air Force musicians perform in Lake Charles

Gateway Brass, from the United States Air Force Band of the West, performed at McNeese State University on Thursday night.

Gateway Brass, the brass ensemble of the United States Air Force Band of the West, is stationed at Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

The group travels, performing free concerts with the mission of boosting troop morale, helping with recruiting and strengthening community relations.

Our Lady Queen of Heaven organizes community Christmas project

As Christmas gets closer, here’s another good holiday deed.

This time, by the operators of the food pantry at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church in Lake Charles.

For decades, the church has made community baskets for the needy.

On Wednesday, they gave some away.

Jim Beaugh said the church organizes the effort each year, twice a year.

“Twice a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we give out at least 100 boxes of food on the holiday and we go to Market Basket to buy each family a ham or a turkey,” Beaugh said.

Bishop Noland students weave hats for Kingsley Place residents

There was a special holiday treat on Wednesday for some local students and seniors alike.

Creative third and fourth grade students at Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School in Lake Charles handcrafted hats this Christmas season.

On Wednesday, the students delivered them to nursing home residents at Kingsley Place in Lake Charles.

The students all shared weaving looms and purchased the yarn themselves. Each night after homework, the students would work on weaving the special hats.
