LiHEAP to take appointments for low income utility assistance in Calcasieu

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP) is now taking appointments for Calcasieu residents to apply for financial assistance regarding their electricity and gas utility expenses. Based on 2011- 2012 figures, more than 4,100 people parish-wide benefitted from this program.

The LiHEAP program is based on a resident’s total income, and priority is given to residents over 60 years of age, households with children under 5 years of age, and the disabled. Applications will be evaluated on a first come first serve basis.

Louisiana Operation Game Thief Inc. issues $4,400 in rewards to tipsters

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Department of Wildife and Fisheries:

Louisiana Operation Game Thief, Inc. (LOGT), a Louisiana wildlife crime-stoppers program, awarded $4,400 to diligent citizens statewide at their quarterly meeting on Oct. 3 in Mansura.

The group approved and dispensed cash reward amounts for tipsters who reported wildlife violations that led to 21 subjects being apprehended in wildlife cases. There were a total of 12 cases presented and 46 offenses associated with those cases.

Oct. 3 public meeting in Marksville to address state's black bear program

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will hold a public meeting in Marksville on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. to present information about black bears in Louisiana. The meeting will be held at the Avoyelles Parish School Board office at 221 Tunica Drive West.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will host the Annual Senior Citizen’s Fishing Derby on Friday, Sept. 28 from 7– 11 a.m. at the CPSO Farm Pond behind the Calcasieu Correctional Center at 5400 E. Broad Street in Lake Charles.

Participants are asked to bring their own fishing gear (only one per person, please). The CPSO will provide help in baiting the lines, removing fish from the hook, if requested, and bait shrimp for catching catfish.

The Department of Transportation and Development advises that a new pedestrian actuated traffic signal will be placed in service tomorrow, Aug. 14, in the 4200 block of Ryan Street near McDonald’s. 

The new signalized crosswalk location lies approximately 50 feet to the north of an existing lighted crosswalk. The existing crosswalk will be removed from service after the new crosswalk is in operation.

I-10 Westlake reconstruction to begin

The following is from LA DOTD District 07 - Lake Charles:

Night work will begin Monday, Aug. 13. by Prairie Contractors, Inc. to improve I-10 in Westlake from the PPG Drive Overpass to the Calcasieu River Bridge. 

Traffic will be confined to one lane in the area of construction from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. weekdays and 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends. 

These lane closures will be in effect continuously until work is completed.  Depending on weather conditions the project is expected to be completed by end of January 2013.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a boating education course on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the DeQuincy VFW Post 3802 located at 5416 Hwy. 27 in DeQuincy. The classes are free of charge and are open to any member of the public, age 10 and up.
