The following is a news release from the Louisiana State Police:

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children.  It is estimated that approximately 3 out of 4 child restraint systems are being misused.  In order to help bring attention to these facts and to promote child passenger safety, this week (Sept. 17-22) has been declared Child Passenger Safety Week across the United States.

The following is from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission:

Of all the risks that a child in the United States faces as he or she grows, the simple act of riding in a motor vehicle is the most dangerous in terms of deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 12. Last year in Louisiana, 20 children ages 14 and under died in crashes.

The Calcasieu Parish Human Service Department is teaming up with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. to present a community baby shower for new and expecting mothers.

The shower takes place Saturday, Sept. 15, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Allen P. August Sr., Multi-Purpose Annex, located on 2000 Moeling Street.

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) will be having orientation for anyone interested in becoming a foster/adoptive parent. 

The next orientations are scheduled for Monday, August 27, 2012, Monday, September 17, 2012 and October 8, 2012 - all at 6 p.m.  The orientations are held at 4250 5th Ave. Lake Charles, La Suite #200.
