Feline friend to many, Hobo Hotel namesake dies

Hobo Hotel fans are sad today.

“Hobo,” the shelter’s namesake, died Thursday.

She was 26 years, 6 months and 18 days old.

According to one website’s calculation, she was 123 years old in human years.

Hobo Hotel and Spankey Halfway House For Cats and Kittens in Lake Charles is a non-profit, no-kill shelter for cats and kittens. The facility shelters and cares for cats until they find homes.

Tails will be wagging at the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum and Exhibition Hall, 900 Lakeshore Drive on June 7, 8, 9 and 10. The Calcasieu Kennel Club teams up with the Acadiana Kennel Club of Lafayette to host four combined American Kennel Club (AKC) sanctioned confirmation dog shows.

Dogs from all over the nation are expected to enter and judges from all over the country and Canada will be on hand with various judging assignments. During the event, several different types of competitions will be held, including conformation, junior showmanship and best puppy competition.

Last chance to get low cost rabies vaccination will be held on Saturday, April 14th by the Office of Animal Services from 7:00 a.m. till Noon at the Sulphur High School parking lot.

Vaccination and licensing rates for spay/neutered animals is $8, and unaltered pets will cost $10. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a portable kennel.

Payment will be accepted in the form of cash or check.

Pets are required to wear a license tag in all areas of the parish once a pet is vaccinated by a liccensed Louisiana Veterinarian in Calcasieu Parish. Cat owners are also encouraged to place the tag on a humane breakaway collar.

The Office of Animal Services will be offering two drive-thru rabies clinics in an effort to prevent the spread of Rabies Infection in Calcasieu Parish.  Louisiana State Code requires that all dogs and cats over the age of three months must be vaccinated for rabies and licensed.

Vaccination and licensing rates for spay/neutered animals is $8. Unaltered pets will cost $10.00.  Dogs will need to be on a leash and cats must be in a portable kennel. Pet owners may pay by cash or check.

Clinic dates, time, and locations are:

  • March 31st       7am – 12pm    Burton Coliseum Northwest Parking Lot
  • April 14th         7am – 12pm    Sulphur High School Parking Lot

Hobo Hotel, Inc. and Spankey Halfway House for Cats and Kittens, a local non-profit animal rescue group, will celebrate Hobo the cat’s 26th birthday party Sunday, March 25 at the Hobo Hotel Adoption Center at 650 E. School Street from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

Cats and volunteers alike will celebrate as Hobo the cat, Hobo Hotel’s namesake who was born in 1986, turns twenty-six years young.  There will be refreshments, door prizes, and Hobo herself will be making a special appearance.

Hobo Hotel for Cats and Kittens is holding a garage sale will help fund the ongoing rescue work for homeless cats and kittens in the Lake Area.

The garage sale will be held Saturday, March 3 from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm (no early birds—early birds will be put to work) at 1801 Common Street in Lake Charles.
