DOTD issues Thanksgiving travel advisory

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development:

BATON ROUGE-- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) today advised drivers of upcoming work schedules for interstate and major road projects throughout Louisiana during the Thanksgiving holiday (Thursday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 25).

Section of Texas Street closed temporarily for wastewater repairs

LAKE CHARLES -- Both lanes of Texas Street between California Street and E. School Street will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic until 6 p.m. today, Monday, Nov. 19 for repairs to the wastewater line. Residents in the affected area will continue to have vehicular access by way of either California Street or E. School Street.

Louisiana rear-seat passenger deaths fall to 10-year low

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission:

BATON ROUGE – The number of rear-seat passengers killed in Louisiana crashes fell to a 10-year low in 2011, according to preliminary data. The reduced fatality figure is especially significant in that it came following the Louisiana Legislature's passage of a law in 2009 that broadened the state's seat-belt use requirement to include rear-seat passengers.

La. 378 (Sampson Street) railroad crossing work set this week

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development:

LA 378 (between I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge and Sulphur Avenue) will be closed to all traffic Thursday, Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 5. There will be alternating one lane closures in each direction. Traffic will be detoured via LA 379 (Sulphur Avenue and Miller Avenue).

Weather permitting, Union Pacific Railroad plans to replace the railroad crossing during  these closures. Signs will be in place to guide travel around the work zone.

LHSC reminds that texting while driving is illegal in Louisiana

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission:

Highway safety officials remind motorists that Louisiana is one of 39 states that bans texting while driving. The maximum penalty for a first-offense texting-while-driving violation is $175 and subsequent offenses are punishable by fines of up to $500.
